Keeping your range hood and exhaust fan clean is crucial for their efficiency and for maintaining a fresh-smelling kitchen. Grease buildup can reduce performance and even become a fire hazard. Here’s how to tackle this task effectively:

  1. Power off the appliance: Always unplug or turn off the device before cleaning to avoid accidents.

  2. Disassemble removable parts: Detach filters or other washable components. Check the manual for proper guidance on handling these parts.

  3. Prepare a cleaning mix: Combine warm water with a grease-cutting dish soap or white vinegar. For stubborn grease, mix in a tablespoon of baking soda.

  4. Soak the filters: Place the filters in the solution and let them soak for 20-30 minutes. Scrub gently with a soft-bristle brush to remove grease.

  5. Wipe down exterior surfaces: Use a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth dipped in the solution to clean the hood’s outer surfaces. Be cautious with stainless steel or polished finishes.

  6. Rinse and dry thoroughly: Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue, then dry the parts completely before reassembling.

  7. Clean the interior carefully: Use a damp cloth to wipe the inside, steering clear of electrical parts.

  8. Replace or maintain filters: For range hoods with charcoal filters, replace them as recommended by the manufacturer. Metal filters should be cleaned regularly.

  9. Use preventive measures: Regularly apply a degreasing product or specific cleaner to minimize buildup over time.

  10. Reassemble and test: Once everything is clean and dry, reassemble the appliance and check that it’s functioning properly.

Consistent cleaning ensures a longer lifespan for your range hood and a healthier kitchen environment. Try to perform this maintenance at least every two weeks for optimal results.
